Matthijs de Jong studied International Economics at the Erasmus University. For his thesis on economic growth and social cohesion he did research in the US and Japan. He also studied Business Administration specialising in change management. In his thesis he researched the effects of emissions trading on companies and the environment. He was an intern at the Public Governance Institute, providing consultancy services for Government agencies. Finally he was a volunteer for development organization Cordaid helping a local business in Nairobi, Kenya, exporting their products.
